David Warner will miss the upcoming Twenty20 International series against India, which starts on November 23. This is just four days after the two teams competed in the Men’s World Cup final of 2023.
Warner scored 535 runs at the World Cup at an average of almost fifty runs per game. Warner is scheduled to retire from Test cricket after the Sydney Test against Pakistan in the new year. Along with a number of other multi-format players like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cam Green, and Mitchell Marsh, the opening batter is also being rested for the series.
According to a statement from Cricket Australia, “selectors decided Warner would return home on the back of a successful yet demanding World Cup campaign.”
The T20I team now includes Aaron Hardie, a fast-bowling all-rounder from Western Australia who debuted for Australia earlier this year in South Africa. In addition, Spencer Johnson has been replaced by Kane Richardson, who is a healing hamstring injury.
The announcement has been made that Andre Borovec would serve as the team’s stand-in coach while Andrew McDonald, the head coach, takes a vacation.
This series, which will conclude Australia’s lengthy tour of India, will be captained by Matthew Wade. The tour started in September 2023 with a three-match ODI series and will conclude with a T20I series. In between is the World Cup, which Australia won in the summit match against hosts India to secure their sixth title.
Mitchell Marsh has been touted to lead the T20I side full time after the series, leading up to the T20 World Cup in 2024, which will be held in the United States and the Caribbean. Australia are further set to play a three-match series against New Zealand, and another against West Indies in February 2024 in preparation for the global T20 title.
