The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet initiated discussions about the future of the coaching staff led by Rahul Dravid. His tenure could have ended if India had lost the semi-final at Wankhede without much thought on Wednesday. Now, it will conclude on November 19.
Rahul Dravid and his coaching staff had a contract until the World Cup, and there were different perspectives within the BCCI regarding the future of the coaching team. Initially, senior officials within the BCCI had reservations about Dravid’s coaching style, but the recent performance of the Indian team in the World Cup has changed those perceptions.
India is performing exceptionally well in the World Cup, showing dominance throughout the tournament. In this context, there is a strong possibility of contract renewal or extension. However, the crucial question is whether Dravid himself is interested in staying in the position.
When he took over the role in 2021, the initial stance was that he was an interim coach. Some close associates suggested that he might voluntarily step down after the World Cup without worrying about the team’s performance. However, Dravid’s current inclination is unknown, and there has been no discussion about his future in the past month or earlier. He has focused on his work.
Whether Dravid continues or not, there is speculation that members of his coaching staff – batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T. Dilip – could be offered an extension. Details are expected to emerge soon.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that VVS Laxman will take charge of coaching the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in the absence of Rahul Dravid, starting from the T20 series against Australia beginning on November 23. This arrangement gives the BCCI some time to make the final decision on Dravid’s future and his team.
BCCI has not confirmed the date for selecting the team for the T20 series. It is estimated that it will happen on the next day of the final, i.e., on November 20. The match in Visakhapatnam will start two days later.
