David Willey to retire from international cricket after World Cup 2023.

David Jonathan Willey is an English cricket player who was born on February 28, 1990. He is a bowler and bats left-handed. He is the son of Peter Willey, an international umpire and former player for England.(Source: ) Willey competed for England in the 2022 T20 World Cup, which they won. He declared his retirement from international cricket on November 1, 2023.

David Willey, an English cricket player, was not included in the ECB’s yearly contractual procedure for 2023–2024. He will retire from all international cricket after the conclusion of the current 2023 World Cup in India. As of last week, Willey, 33, is the only player of the current England World Cup team without a central contract for the next campaign.

“I never wanted this day to come,” Willey stated on social media on Wednesday (November 1), the day he announced his choice. “I’ve only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England since I was a small child. I feel that the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the conclusion of the World Cup, and I do so with deep regret.

“I have taken great delight in wearing the shirt and have given the insignia on my chest my all. Being a member of a world-class white ball team with some of the greatest players in the game is truly an honour. Along the journey, I’ve experienced some really trying times as well as made some wonderful friends and memories.

I would not have been able to pursue my aspirations without the sacrifice and constant support of my wife, two children, parents, and grandparents. I will always be grateful to you for sharing the priceless moments and picking up the pieces when I’ve fallen apart.”

Protecting the winners With five losses in six games, England is at bottom of the standings and is only theoretically still in the competition. Willey stated that he will “give my everything and more” in the three remaining group stage matches against Pakistan, the Netherlands, and Australia…

“My choice has nothing to do with our World Cup performance; I feel I still have a lot more to give both on and off the field while I am playing my best cricket. “Anybody who knows me knows without a doubt that I will give this campaign everything I have and more in the remaining days,” he remarked. “That’s the only way I know.”

Willey did, however, mention that he will keep working for franchises and domestic sides in the shorter forms (T20 and the Hundred). Willey played for Welsh Fire in the Hundred and was selected captain of Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast the previous year. In January, he is scheduled to compete with the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20. Willey is currently under contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore for the IPL.

Domestic Career : Northamptonshire :-

Willey began his playing career in the country Championship division two, representing his native country of Northamptonshire. After playing for O.N.’s and Northants Academy while going through the Northampton ranks, he was given his opportunity in the 2009 season at the age of 19, following a strong preseason. He played his first game of the season against one of his father’s former clubs, Leicestershire. After a solid combination with Andrew Hall, he got sixty runs on his debut, but he was out for a duck with a weak shot in his maiden one-day match against Essex, which was broadcast. In his second first-class match against Kent, he removed Phil Edwards by leg before wicket to claim his first wicket. His two-year professional contract was awarded to him on May 8th, following his strong start to the season. He was most successful in Twenty20 cricket, though, as he bowled 3/9 against Worcestershire in his opening spell and concluded the 2009 season with an average of 11.30. In 2010, he costarred with Jack Brooks, another Northants player, in the Cricket AM show Brain vs. Brawn.In 2013, Willey helped Northamptonshire to a 102-run victory in a rain-shortened Friends Life Twenty20 Final against Surrey where he made 60 with the bat, then had figures of 4/9, including a match-ending hat-trick to clean up the tail.

Yorkshire :-

It was reported on August 19, 2015, that Willey would sign a three-year contract with Yorkshire at the beginning of the 2016 season.On May 1, 2016, he played his first Yorkshire match at Trent Bridge against Nottinghamshire.

Perth Scorchers :-

The Perth Scorchers signed Willey for the 2015–16 BBL season. Following an impressive debut campaign, he was kept on for the 2016–17 campaign. He did well with the ball in the opening game versus the Adelaide Strikers, capturing two wickets, although he only managed to score two runs off of five balls at bat. He managed just one run and did not claim a wicket in the Scorchers’ crushing loss in their second matchup with the Sydney Sixers. He bowled well in the third match against Melbourne, taking two wickets with the ball before Ashton Agar won with a six in the last over. As the sole overseas player on the team for the 2017–18 campaign, he was once again retained by the Scorchers.

Northern Superchargers :-

Northern Superchargers signed Willey for The Hundred tournament’s first season.[3–5] Due to Faf du Plessis’s withdrawal from the competition, he led the team as captain for the first time. Du Plessis took Willey’s spot as captain when he returned in 2022.

Indian Premier League :-

For the 2018 Indian Premier League season, Willey was signed by the Chennai Super Kings to fill in for injured player Kedar Jadhav, who was hurt in the tournament’s opening game. Mitchell Santner, a spinner from New Zealand, was also sought after as a substitute. David Willey was playing county cricket matches for Yorkshire at the time of his late IPL call-up, prior to agreeing to join CSK.In addition, he became the 12th English player to be selected for the 2018 Indian Premier League. In Along with Liam Plunkett (for DD) and Alex Hales (for SRH), he was one of three cricketers from England to obtain late IPL call-ups for the 2018 season of the IPL.

David Willey was kept by Chennai Super Kings for the 2019 Indian Premier League. The Chennai Super Kings released him prior to the 2020 Indian Premier League auction.11] He was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in February 2022 during the Indian Premier League 2022 auction.

International career : 2015 Ireland :-  For the Test match against Bangladesh, Willey was included in the England U19 cricket team. He did not play in the first Test match, but in the opening over of the second Test he scored 65.(Source: ) On May 8, 2015, he took his first wicket in an England One Day International against Ireland that was impacted by weather.

 

2015 New Zealand, Australia and Pakistan :-

On June 14, 2015, Willey was also called up to the England ODI team against New Zealand, and he participated in the series’ third game. He concluded with statistics of 3–69, having taken a wicket with his second ball. England easily won the fourth game of the series, with him recording figures of 2–89.He recorded a double-double in the series finale, helping England win 3-2.(6) On June 23, 2015, Willey made his Twenty20 International debut in the same series.He contributed six runs and 3-22 in order to assist England win the game.

In the lone Twenty20 match versus Australia, which England won by five runs, Willey participated, recording a 2–32 score.In the final two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) versus Australia, he participated and scored 351 runs in the fourth ODI, which England won by a wicket.10] Willey was out for a duck in the final ODI but managed a 13 as England lost the match and the series 3-2.

During the ODI series against Pakistan, Willey maintained his spot in the team.He did not claim a wicket in the opening game, but he came back to help England win by 95 runs in the second match with statistics of 3–25.13][14] He took 1-45 in the third game and 2-34 in the series finale to help England win by 84 runs by limiting Pakistan to 271.

2015–16 South Africa :-

Willey participated in all three of England’s matches against South Africa, taking 1-30 in the opening game as England prevailed by 39 runs using the DL Method.He did not play in the last two games and did not take a wicket in the second or third match In the end, England lost the series 3-2.Despite England losing the match by three wickets, Willey participated in the opening Twenty20 International match against South Africa, recording stats of 0–15 and hitting an undefeated seven at the bat.

2016 T20 World Cup :-

Willey featured in all of England’s world T 20 matches in 2016, He took 1-40 against south africa and 1-33 against West Indies. He Played a key role in England’s victory over Afghanistan, scoring an unbeaten 20 to take his team to 141 and then taking 2-33 with the ball. He and Moeen Ali set the record for the best partnership for the eighth wicket in T20world cup history with 57 runs. In the same match which a record of 2-26 against Sri Lanka, Willey shows no signs of slowing down. After the game, Willey was found guilty of using abusive language and pointing towards the pavilion to bid farewall to Sri Lankn batsman Milinda Siriwardena. He was also fined 15% of his match fee. In the semi-final against New Zealand, he recorded score of 1-17 helping England advance to the championship game. 

Despite Willey’s excellent bowling performance ( he finished with the figure of 3-20), England lost the match and finished as runners-up. At the 2016 T20 world cup, the ICC awarded him in it’s Team of the Tournament. 2016 Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh the first ODI Match between Sri Lanka and Willey was drawn and willey won with 2-56. He took 1-65 in the second game, which England won by 10 Wickets, and he also took a wicket in the rain interrupted third One Day international. He claimed figures of 2-58 in the fourth match of the series, helping England restrict Sri Lanka to 305 and win by six wickets. He scored 434 runs in the series finale, helping England win the match and series 3-0. 

Despite finishing with figures of 0-40 and failing to take a wicket, willey featured in the fourth One Day international against Pakistan, which England eventually won. Willey failed to take a wicket in England series ending’s series ending defeat. 

2017 India, West Indies :-

Willey scored 10 runs without conceding a run before collecting 2–47 as England lost by three wickets in the opening One-Day International. India won the second ODI by a margin of 15 runs, and he took 0–32. Despite being injured, he scored 1-8 in the last ODI, which England won by five runs.

Willey took a total of 1–39 to begin the opening ODI series match against the West Indies in September, a match that England won by seven wickets.He was chosen for the following match, but it was called off due to rain after just two balls were played, therefore he was unable to participate. In the third match, England again triumphed over the West Indies, with Willey recording a score of 1–34.Despite his absence from the final two games of the series, England was still able to win both games and the series 4-0.

2018 Tri-Series, Australia :-

managed just three runs in the second Twenty20 encounter of the tri-series, but his performance of 3–28 was insufficient to prevent England from losing to Australia.In the next match, Australia trounced England once more with Willey scoring ten runs and taking a record of 1-30.In the following game, England lost to New Zealand for the third time in the series, despite his twenty-one runs and lack of wicket-taking.In the last game of the series, England defeated New Zealand despite his ten runs and lack of wicket-taking 56.

In the opening game of the ODI series, England overcame Australia with Willey taking a figure of 1–41 and scoring an undefeated 35 runs.[58] He made eleven runs in the following game and did not take a wicket as England triumphed over Australia once more. Willey recorded a figure of 2–56 as England defeated Australia in the third match with a record-breaking 481 for 6, the highest score in ODI cricket history and the most humiliating loss Australia has ever suffered in terms of runs scored.In the fourth match, his team defeated Australia once more with Willey taking four wickets and giving up forty-three runs.In Even though England won both the match and the series 5-0, he was not present for the final game.

Willey took a figure of 1–31 as England won the only T20 against Australia.

2019 Cricket World Cup and beyond :-

Willey was included in England’s tentative Cricket World Cup team in April 2019.Willey was left off of the final fifteen-man England World Cup roster when the team was announced on May 21, 2019.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Willey was selected on May 29, 2020, to be part of a 55-person player group that would start training in advance of international matches that will take place in England. In Willey was included to England’s 24-man squad on July 9, 2020, so that they could begin private training in preparation for the ODI series against Ireland. Willey was included in the England squad for the ODI series on July 27, 2020. With statistics of 5/30 from 8.4 overs in the opening match against Ireland on July 30, 2020, Willey achieved his first five-wicket haul in an ODI. Willey was included in the England team that was announced in September 2021 for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
