The release of Ben Stokes by Chennai Super Kings seems imminent. Despite unwillingness, this decision is based on his potential unavailability for IPL 2024, owing to his recent purchase by CSK in the mini-auction for INR 16.25 crores. The English all-rounder participated in only two games throughout the season, indicating that he might undergo left knee surgery, requiring approximately two months for recovery. However, the Chennai Super Kings management is not willing to take any risks regarding his availability for the league scheduled in March-May 2024.
Sources suggest that CSK management has discussed the situation with Stokes, who has hinted at focusing on IPL after the conclusion of the World Cup campaign. Despite the conclusion of England’s World Cup campaign, CSK officials have not directly contacted him yet, and discussions with his manager regarding his availability for the upcoming season remain inconclusive.
An official from CSK stated, “If Stokes can be available, we won’t consider releasing him as he is a big-match player, and we respect him a lot. But if he can’t make it for the season, we will block him, as the 16 crores can be used to acquire some good players.”
Meanwhile, another potential release, Lockie Ferguson, is under consideration. Initially purchased by Gujarat Titans for INR 10 crores in 2022, he was later traded to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023. Considering his injury history, KKR management is reportedly contemplating his release.
There are also speculations about possible trades between franchises involving high-profile players like Shardul Thakur and Harshal Patel between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, it has been confirmed that no such trade will take place.
Discussions about some high-profile trades among franchises have surfaced, and the final day for these trades to be completed could be known by November 19. Franchises are required to announce their retention and release lists by November 26. The auction is scheduled to take place on December 19 at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai.”
